Since I was a little girl growing up in Puerto Rico, I was always fascinated by the Moon. I always thought I saw the face of a woman, a lady looking back at me, illuminating my path as she glowed in the deep dark night sky. I thought it was the Virgin Mary, as she was the only female ‘divine’ being that was on displayed around the Nativity scene during Christmas time or during Jesus’ judgement and crucifixion around Easter.
As I found Wicca, I learned that the Moon has her own Spirit and has walked with me since the moment I was born. After I got into the Craft more than 20 years ago, I began studying and researching by reading every book I could find available to me. I learned that there was plenty I could do if I learned how to harness the Moon’s energy.
On this page I will only touch on the bare basics of how I use the Moon’s power within my own work, both internally and externally. Beginning with the New Moon cycling all the way to Full form and then back to New in about 28 days, each phase lasts about 3 days: the day prior to the full phase, the day of the full phase, and then the day after the full phase. So, doing ritual or spell work is best suited for those three days, depending on what you are intending to accomplish.
The New Moon
This is a time of reflection and spell works to kickstart new projects. Think about this phase as the one where you’d plant seeds, setting for growth.

The Full Moon
When the Moon is completely illuminated by the Sun, we can see her in all Her splendor. On a very clear, crisp night, we can see her craters and her oceans, glowing strongly and beautifully. For about 3 days, Her energy and potential are at the maximum state to work on spells, rituals and even to meditate.
Because she goes from Full Moon to New Moon over 14 days, this is the time to carry out banishing spells and rituals. This is not quite the time to start anything new. It’s time to get rid of anything negative in our lives. Think about! As the Moon ‘disappears’ so do the issues you’ve addressed during the time of your spell or ritual.
Although it is not required to do during a Full Moon, “Drawing Down the Moon” is an experience that touches my soul deeply to my core. Regardless of your relationship with the Moon, whether it’s strong or non-existent, the Moon is a powerful entity to help you with your spiritual path.
One thing I like to do, especially after I have drawn down the Moon, is to take a Full Moon bath and these have had their variations over the years. Some Full Moon baths have focused on banishing low-self esteem, getting over a sour situationship, dealing with stress, etc. Each bath has had also different ingredients and items, and have required a different set of tools.
